This has been a long time coming, and finally our waste management is getting greener: there is a new green bin program in Brantford which is going to make a big difference in how we handle our waste. Let me break it down for you.

Introducing the Green Bin Program

Starting on November 1, 2023, the COB is launching the Green Bin Program which focuses on separating our organic waste from regular garbage. This simple act can have a huge impact on our environment and the future of our city.

When and How to Get Your Green Bin

First things first, the Green Bin distribution will kick off on September 13, 2023, and continue until the end of October. If you don’t get one by then and you’re eligible for the program, don’t worry! Just reach out to GreenBinInfo@brantford.ca or give Customer Service a call at 519-759-4150 after November 1, and they’ll hook you up.

Collection Made Easy

Once you’ve got your Green Bin, every week, like clockwork, there will be a scheduled collection in your area. Just remember to put your bin out at the curb before 7 a.m. on your collection day, and you’re good to go.

Why It Matters

Now, you might be wondering why this program is such a big deal. Well, it’s all about preserving the city’s Mohawk Street Landfill and making it last longer. Right now, our existing programs, like Recycling and Yard Waste, only divert 34% of our waste. The city’s goal is to hit Zero Waste by 2050, and we can only do that by increasing waste diversion to 70%. Plus, by participating in the Green Bin Program, we’re not just reducing landfill waste; we’re also cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions. That’s a win-win!

What Goes in the Green Bin

Wondering what you can toss in there? It’s all about organic waste:

  • Baked goods
  • Bread and buns
  • Coffee grounds and tea bags
  • Dairy products
  • Eggs and eggshells
  • Food liquids, including oils and grease (500 ml or less)
  • Frozen foods (remove the packaging)
  • Fruits and seeds
  • Meat, poultry, and fish (bones too)
  • Nuts
  • Pasta, flour, and grains
  • Pet food (wet and dry) and bird seed
  • Pumpkins (cut them up)
  • Salads and dressings
  • Sauces and gravies
  • Solid fats and grease (like lard, butter, and bacon fat)
  • Syrups, jams, jellies, and food spreads
  • Vegetables and peelings

Other Stuff You Can Put In

But it’s not just food waste. You can also toss in things like paper bags, muffin cups, plates, cups, takeout containers, paper towels, napkins, tissues, parchment paper, and even pizza boxes (just make sure to break them down).

What Not to Put In

A few things are a no-go for the Green Bin, like noxious plants and weeds, pet waste, diapers, hygiene products, and plastic bags.

Who’s Involved?

This program isn’t just for some of us; it’s for a whole bunch of residents and even our schools and city buildings. Distribution of Green Bin containers and info will happen before the program starts on November 1, 2023.

So, there you have it, folks! Let’s all jump on board with the Green Bin Program and do our part to make Brantford greener and cleaner. Together, we can make a big difference!
